The term Anthropocene is a proposed geological epoch when human activity has become the dominant force affecting the planet's environment, climate, and geophysical systems including large-scale alterations in Earth's surface, widespread pollution, biodiversity loss, and anthropogenic climate change.

American scientist and researcher, Harold E. Edgerton and colleagues at EG&G became a prime contractor for the Atomic Energy Commission photographing and recording nuclear tests for the U.S. through the 1950s and 1960s. This photograph of an atomic bomb was likely taken on June 5, 1952, as part of Operation Tumbler-Snapper test series at the Nevada Proving Grounds, using a Rapatronic camera with 1/100,000,000-of-a-second exposure after detonation.
